Mendhar, Poonch: BJP Jan Kalyan Manch Jammu and Kashmir Vice President Sardar Zahir Khan has urged the Central Government and the Jammu and Kashmir UT Administration to establish a dedicated Women’s College in Mendhar, saying the move would provide girls from remote and economically weaker families with greater access to higher education.

Sardar Zahir Khan said that Mendhar is a vast, hilly and geographically remote sub-division where a significant section of the population depends on daily wage labour, agriculture and other limited sources of livelihood. He said many poor and middle-class families find it difficult to send their daughters to Jammu or other distant cities for higher studies due to the additional burden of transportation, accommodation, food and other expenses.

Local institution needed for aspiring girl students

He said Mendhar has a large number of talented and ambitious girls who wish to continue their education after school, but the shortage of adequate higher educational institutions in the area remains a major challenge. According to him, establishing a Women’s College in Mendhar would create new opportunities for students to pursue undergraduate and other higher education courses closer to their homes.

Financial burden on families could be reduced

Sardar Zahir Khan said that a local women’s college would help reduce the financial pressure on families by eliminating the need for students to relocate to distant cities. He added that girls would also benefit from having access to an educational environment within the sub-division, allowing them to continue their studies while remaining connected with their families.

He emphasized that the geographical conditions of Mendhar, its population, educational requirements and economic circumstances should be taken into consideration while planning higher education infrastructure for the region.

Appeal for early action

Sardar Zahir Khan appealed to the Central Government and the Jammu and Kashmir UT Administration to examine the demand and initiate the necessary process for establishing a Women’s College in Mendhar at the earliest.

He said that improving access to higher education for girls would not only support students in achieving their academic aspirations but would also contribute to the long-term social and economic development of Mendhar and surrounding areas.
