Srinagar/New Delhi, 6th September 2026, M. Yaqoob Dunoo, National Spokesperson of the National Loktantrik Party (NLP), has strongly condemned the demolition of the historic mosque located inside the Saharanpur Collectorate premises in Uttar Pradesh early this morning.
The mosque, which according to historical records had existed for more than a century, was demolished by the district administration amid heavy police deployment following the dismissal of an appeal challenging the earlier order concerning the structure. Reports have cited records dating back to 1911 regarding the existence of the place of worship.
M. Yaqoob Dunoo said that religious places associated with generations of people carry immense historical, cultural and emotional significance, and any action affecting such a place must be handled with the utmost sensitivity, transparency and respect for constitutional values.
“The demolition of a more-than-century-old mosque is deeply disturbing. We respect the rule of law and judicial institutions, but at the same time, the administration must ensure that justice, communal harmony and constitutional safeguards are never compromised. Matters involving places of worship require dialogue, restraint and the highest degree of sensitivity.”
He questioned the need for carrying out such a sensitive demolition operation in the early hours of the morning and urged the Uttar Pradesh Government to make the complete legal and administrative record of the action public. Reports indicate the demolition began around the early morning hours under heavy security.
The NLP National Spokesperson appealed to the people of Uttar Pradesh and the country to maintain peace and communal harmony and not allow the incident to become a source of confrontation between communities.
M. Yaqoob Dunoo further said that the National Loktantrik Party believes in equality before law, constitutional rights, secularism, justice and peaceful coexistence, and will continue to raise its voice whenever the rights, dignity and sentiments of citizens are at stake.
He demanded that the Uttar Pradesh Government provide a clear explanation regarding the historical status of the mosque, the legal proceedings, the demolition process and the steps taken to protect communal peace following the action.
“India belongs equally to every citizen. Our historical places of worship are part of the social memory of communities, and their protection must be approached with responsibility, not confrontation,” M. Yaqoob Dunoo said.
