Srinagar, September 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed intense protests on Monday after BJP legislators demanded that Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather vacate the Chair amid a dispute over a resolution concerning the restoration of statehood and references to autonomy.

BJP Raises Objections Over Assembly Proceedings

BJP MLA R.S. Pathania informed the House that the party had submitted a motion seeking the Speaker’s removal. He questioned how Rather could continue presiding over the proceedings while the motion was pending. BJP members raised slogans demanding that the Speaker leave the Chair.

Speaker Cites Assembly Procedure

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the Assembly’s rules provide a prescribed procedure for taking up a motion seeking the Speaker’s removal. According to reports, he referred to the 14-day requirement before such a motion can be taken up and continued with the proceedings.

Proceedings Disrupted Amid Sloganeering

The protests intensified as BJP legislators entered the Well of the House. Reports said members raised slogans, while some BJP MLAs conducted parallel mock proceedings. The disruption affected Question Hour and the normal functioning of the Assembly.

The BJP has objected to references concerning autonomy and the constitutional position in the statehood resolution, while the ruling side has defended the resolution seeking restoration of full statehood. The matter remains a major point of disagreement between the government and the opposition during the ongoing Assembly session.
