Project to Preserve Heritage and Improve Pilgrim Facilities

Jammu, October 2, 2026: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has accorded administrative approval for the restoration of the traditional Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route at an estimated cost of ₹15 crore. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the decision, stating that the project aims to preserve the heritage of the historic route while improving infrastructure and facilities for pilgrims.

Focus on Traditional Route

According to reports, the restoration project will focus on improving the traditional pilgrimage route while retaining its historical and cultural character. The government intends to make the journey smoother, safer and more convenient for devotees visiting the shrine.

Heritage Conservation Alongside Development

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said development of pilgrimage infrastructure should go hand in hand with preservation of the heritage and traditional character of important religious sites in Jammu and Kashmir. The project is therefore expected to combine infrastructure improvement with conservation of the historic pilgrimage route.

Traditional Route Through Bamyal

Reports have also linked the revival project with the historic route through Bamyal, which was traditionally used by pilgrims from the Jammu region. Residents of villages along the route have sought its restoration, citing potential benefits for pilgrimage access and local development.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, located near Katra in Reasi district, is one of Jammu and Kashmir’s major pilgrimage destinations and attracts devotees from across India and abroad. The restoration initiative is expected to strengthen facilities along the traditional route while preserving its historical significance.
